"Talking only of 'voice' is limiting in Mariangela Bettanini's case. In fact the singular expression isn't really well adapted to the polymorphous reality that this artist's voice can develop. The journey of her sound emphasizes a rediscovery of the various 'voices of the within' which we sense we possess, but no longer know how to evoke.

There's panic, ecstatic joy, fear and enchantment. And there is a serene and conscious knowledge of the fact that even far away cultures have found their own different answers for the way emotion is made to resonate in the brightness of the voice. So in the different tracks of The Fragrance we can find the various Afro-American, the Avant-Guard European, the Eastern and the Northeast school of song.. This is a kind of work which could be called a sound prism: any way you twist and turn it, you will always get a fragment of a new 'sound landscape'."
